We have been so busy the last month...time is flying by....and we (baby and I) are growing!

I am so blessed that this pregnancy has been so great so far! A little recap of our weeks!

Week 22

We traveled to Washington, D.C. Jordan was chosen to represent Texas radiology residents to travel to D.C. and work with the lobbyists that help fight for Radiologists. Jordan was able to meet Harry Reid, and a bunch of other senators and representatives. He went to "the hill," had many business lunches and dinner while I played in DC. It was a ton of fun, and I am working through my 150+ pictures.

Week 23

Back home from DC, this week was normal with work. I went back to the doctor for my glucose tolerance test. I was a little nervous, mostly scared, I wouldn't be able to have any ice cream after this visit (I made sure to have my fair share in DC and the night before : ) ) The test went great and actually I was hypoglycemic about 45 min after I left the doctor's office. I ended up scarfing down an entire package of gummy bears. Needless to say, I don't have gestational diabetes! SO relieved.

Week 24

On the road again! We headed to Biloxi to see everyone. We went during the week since my work schedule is mostly weekend days. We relaxed, worked on a couple of things for baby, and mostly received belly rubs. Baby girl received much love!

I am still feeling more body than kicks when it comes to baby girl, she still gives me a jab every now and then but she's not too rough...yet. Apparently she still has room in there. I feel her most at 5am and late afternoon (4-5pm). I feel her when I am standing in my patient's rooms just talking with them. One day after running from patient room to patient room, I finally sat down to chart at the desk and she went crazy kicking me : )

This week, I am 25 weeks pregnant and I am still feeling great. I definitely understand why women say the second trimester is so wonderful. You get used to the belly, get some energy back, and feel normal. Except for the weird looking pants, I forget I am pregnant.....until I get a sweet love tap from baby girl of course.

Pregnancy Highlights

How far along? 21 Weeks

Size of the baby? Your baby now weighs about three-quarters of a pound and is approximately 10 1/2 inches long — the length of a carrot. You may soon feel like she's practicing martial arts as her initial fluttering movements turn into full-fledged kicks and nudges. You may also discover a pattern to her activity as you get to know her better. In other developments, your baby's eyebrows and lids are present now, and if you're having a girl, her vagina has begun to form as well.

Maternity Clothes? I wore a pair of full panel maternity pants this week and they are super comfy! There is no question that I am pregnant these days. People ask me how far along I am regularly.

Gender? We are having a baby girl!

Movement? I went to an aesthetician for my face this week and baby girl had a very active moment! Still no jabs, just a churning.

Sleep? Sleeping well, and waiting for my snoogle (body pillow) to come in the mail Thursday. Jordan is concerned about whether there will be room for him in the bed!

Cravings? I am not feeling as hungry lately…hmm? I have never eaten brussel sprouts EVER, but have had them twice since being pregnant. Loving promegrante juice, and still drink a lot of milk with the occasional cookie….. : )

Symptoms? I had my first run in with a little sciatic nerve pain. It didn’t last long and must have been the way I slept. I miss sleeping on my stomach. I think I must be more tense when I am sleeping because I wake up stiff.

Best Moment of the Week? Receiving roses from Jordan for our anniversary and getting to celebrate three years of marriage.

Jordan and I celebrated 3 years of wedded bliss yesterday! Lately we have been especially thankful for all that we have been given. Our jobs remind us daily how blessed we are to have life, health and each other. Since we will be making a special trip soon, we decided to stay in on our actually anniversary. I woke up to a sweet card from Jordan and red roses at the door.

Flowers from my husband are rare, so that was a special surprise! Jordan is practical and flowers, well.....don't last. It was a very sweet gesture.

I decided if we didn't go out, I could still cook a great meal for us to celebrate three years.

We dined on

Of course it was an occasion to break out our fine china.

Dinner was wonderful, and it was great to talk about the past three years and the many more to come!

***As I was buying a few fun things at Central Market (including the wine) the nice man at the checkout counter asked me how far along I am in my pregnancy.....I quickly added that the wine was for my husband to celebrate our anniversary (I was drooling watching Jordan drink it--ha)! He asked me if this was our first child, and then reminded me this would be our last anniversary as two!

20 weeks

Pregnancy Highlights

How far along? 20 Weeks

Size of the baby? Baby girl weighs about 10 1/2 ounces now (well she was approximately 11 ounces last week so this may be a little off). She's also around 6 1/2 inches long from head to bottom and about 10 inches from head to heel — the length of a banana. (For the first 20 weeks, when a baby's legs are curled up against her torso and hard to measure, measurements are taken from the top of her head to her bottom — the "crown to rump" measurement. After 20 weeks, she's measured from head to toe.)

She's swallowing more these days, which is good practice for her digestive system. She's also producing meconium, a black, sticky by-product of digestion. This gooey substance will accumulate in her bowels, and you'll see it in his first soiled diaper (some babies pass meconium in the womb or during delivery).

Maternity Clothes? I am wearing my regular tops and mix them with my wonderful elastic maternity jeans and a couple of other maternity pants. Scrubs are my friend, thank goodness work clothes are easy!

Gender? We are having a baby girl!

Movement? I feel like a twisting motion, every now and then, and I can pretty much tell where she is hanging out, I think my belly is uneven with the left side a little more pudgy.

Sleep? I am getting enough sleep but still wake up once to go to the bathroom and numerous other times to readjust the pillow in between my legs. I am an obligatory stomach sleeper so this is a real adjustment. My hips are achy when I wake up in the morning but other than that, sleep is good : )

Cravings? I have been drinking a lot of milk, and Wednesday night after work all I wanted was a Waffle House waffle with milk. And that’s just what I got…ha! Also, so cliché, but pickles and ice cream. Not together, just both. Often. But if anyone knows me this is not weird but normal. I have been cooking a lot of potatoes, not usually a carb fan.

Symptoms? My hips being achy. Still having some breakouts on my face. Gotta love hormones.

Best Moment of the Week? Jordan took Monday off after working all weekend, it was nice to hang out and catch up. We registered and organized our thoughts about what to get baby girl! Wednesday when my alarm went off at 5:15, baby girl woke up too! It was nice to know I wasn’t the only one waking up considering Karma and Jordan were still tucked in bed. Thursday we went to the Arboretum with Hal and Sarah to hear music. Before they met us, we watched several families with little girls. The girls were so sweet, playing, dancing, and climbing all over their daddies. I cannot wait until we can take our little girl there and share one of our favorite spots in Dallas with her.

Baby Girl

Last week, we had our 20 week appointment, I was actually (19 weeks, 3 days) pregnant. We had the BIG sonogram and saw baby from head to toe! We have already looked over baby at 13 weeks and 16 weeks, because there has to be some benefit to Jordan working in the Radiology department right? Baby has been active from the very beginning, doing flips and waving to us at our 13 week sneak peek.

This day she did not disappoint! She was all over the place. My whole belly was full of goo, with the ultrasound teach chasing her around. The tech said she hopes baby calms down before she arrives. And yes, we are having a little girl!

She already looks like she is packed full of personality. Jordan is already adding up the costs between clothes, and a wedding!

It's amazing how when you find out the sex, the perspective sets in! We have been saying "baby" for almost 16 weeks now but now it's little girl, little woman, and a young lady we will be raising. How awesome!

We are so incredibly blessed, baby girl is healthy, she measured 11 ounces and all of her measurements placed her a day early, at 19 weeks 2 days. My doctor said her numbers were so tight with her growth that she is a bit of an overachiever.....oh no! Not that I am surprised since I married one. :)

A little about baby at 19 weeks.....

Your baby's sensory development is exploding! Her brain is designating specialized areas for smell, taste, hearing, vision, and touch. Some research suggests that she may be able to hear your voice now, so don't be shy about reading aloud, talking to her, or singing a happy tune if the mood strikes you.

Your baby weighs about 8 1/2 ounces and measures 6 inches, head to bottom — about the size of a large heirloom tomato. Her arms and legs are in the right proportions to each other and the rest of her body now. Her kidneys continue to make urine and the hair on her scalp is sprouting. A waxy protective coating called the vernix caseosa is forming on her skin to prevent it from pickling in the amniotic fluid.

I also like how it mentions that if I think I am big now, just wait! Nice, thanks.....

18 Weeks

So far, I have no complaints about my pregnancy. It's been smooth (fingers crossed) and I feel great. I was so incredibly tired during the first trimester and although I do have much more energy in the second trimester, the 12 hour shifts at the hospital are long. I have always been someone who usually gets dressed very quickly, my husband would probably disagree BUT I am not the type of girl who goes through five different outfits before I can walk out the door! INSERT--new situation entirely. Each day is new as far as what fits and what does not! It's wild and by far the biggest surprise of my being pregnant. Seems silly that I am surprised, I knew I would grow a belly but I had no idea how in between I would feel!

So far dresses have been my BFF, and I broke down and bought a couple of maternity pieces with Christy, my sister-in-law when she was in town. I have broken down and bought jeans with an elastic waist and have found

A WHOLE NEW WORLD.

They are wonderful! No zipper, no button, just stretchy comfortable greatness! Sound sexy huh?

Jordan and I are so excited that we are expecting! I am 13 weeks pregnant and are still trying to believe we will be parents. I am due February 13th so we will be having a Valentine's baby!

It is truly amazing what you can accomplish in a year! Jordan and I are so excited that I have completed nursing school! I am ready to get back to some normalcy in our lives (I want to be bored) and are looking forward to a fun summer!

Labor of love by a triathlete

Labor day weekend Jordan and I headed down to Austin for the day he has been training for...his first Triathlon! Jordan competed in the 2010 Avia Austin Triathlon. He trained for 3 months in between long work hours of Neuroradiology and the Texas summer heat. We headed down to Austin Sunday morning so Jordan could register, collect his time chip, check out the expo and turn in his bike for the race. It was neat to see the many different types of people competing in the race. After the expo and lunch at Katz's, Jordan dropped me off to study a little Patho/Pharm while he drove through the course.

Jordan and I carb loaded at Taverno's, an Italian restaurant a couple of blocks from our hotel and then walked around Austin. On our way to the race location that night Jordan and I spotted this....

all these people of the Congress Street bridge sparked our attention, and we realized they were waiting on the bats....yes bats....Mexican bats...about 1.5 million of them. They sleep during the day underneath the bridge and then every night at dusk they fly out to eat their body weight in mosquitos. I told the lady explaining this to me that only Austin people would embrace the bats. She responded that they have no mosquitos there. Hmmm...I am moving to Austin ASAP.

This is truly an Austin event--the tour boats, kayakers, and people swarmed in to check out the bats...unfortunately there is no pictures on the bats, they were a little shy and didn't come out until it was too dark for the iphone camera.

Bright and early...like 5am, Jordan woke up and headed to the event!

Jordan's official time was 2:47:50! He swam 1500m, biked 40km, and ran 10km.

So proud of you Jordan. It is amazing what you accomplish when you put your mind to something. I cannot wait to cheer you on for the next one!

Open Water....

Jordan has been training for a Triathlon and he has been practicing his swimming in the pool at our gym. It is HIGHLY recommended to practice at least one open water swim before the race, so Jordan, Karma, and I ventured to Lake Ray Hubbard on Sunday morning for Jordan's practice swim! He did great, I was a nervous wreck...

He swam a total distance of 1700 meters, a little over a mile.

Jordan didn't swim alone, look at all these crazy people joining him (this is a triathlon training group, they allow guests to swim with them to practice open water style)

After a little pep talk from the leader, which consisted of, "I have seen grown people FREAK out on their first open water swim and have to have the kayaker bring them back to shore"....uh thanks for that, they lined up along the shore...

I wonder what my husband is thinking here....maybe, "what have I gotten myself into?"

Jack and Friends

After our little mini-vacay in San Antonio, we continued the fun with Jack Johnson and G. Love. Two awesome singers that are my favorite! They put on an amazing show! We went to the show with some good friends and had a blast--minus the 100 degree weather.

Before the show, Jordan and I hosted dinner at our house--Hawaiian style with pork and pineapple skewers, corn from the grill, homemade brownies, a yummy salad and a great little cocktail!

Basically the Hawaiian part was the pineapple! : ) Here's the cocktail recipe...yummy...

All you need:

-3 cups pineapple chunks (I used canned in 100% pineapple juice)

-1 1/4 c light rum

-1/2 c agave nectar (on the sugar aisle, natural sweetener)

-1/4 c lime juice

-Combine above in blender and mix well

-Place in pitcher and slowly pour in 1 liter of ginger ale

-Serve over ice with a lime garnish [LA ALOHA by giada laurentis]

After dinner, we headed to Fair Park for the concert, and caught G Love on stage

He announced that he would be hanging out signing autographs so the girls decided to go steal a picture and say, "hi" : )

G Love joined Jack on stage for a little jam session!

An encore with Jack Johnson! I would have preferred a personal concert, just me and Jack on the beach in Hawaii, but I guess this just had to do! Jordan and I have so many great memories from JJ songs, it was so great to experience this with him!

Good music. Great friends. Awesome night.

Remember the Alamo!

Since I had a week and a half of "summer," Jordan and I decided to take a trip--just the two of us! We headed to San Antonio on Thursday and returned back to the real world on Sunday...well Jordan returned to the real world and I continued my laziness.

It was my first trip to San Antonio, Jordan had a quick trip when he interviewed there for residency. We stayed at the Omni on the Riverwalk. So nice....

We arrived to San Antonio about 7pm after...ahem...a little mishap involving a brand new tire, a speed bump in Dallas and Lili and her not-so-great driving. We had the tire replaced by Firestone in Waco--highly recommended if you are ever in the area ; )

Jordan and I headed to the Cove in San Antonio first which was featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and is a self-proclaimed SOL food restaurant/laundromat/carwash. Interesting place. The SOL-sustainable, organic, and local has been written up in the New York Times and Texas Monthly. They are known for their burgers, "burgers with conscience." It was eclectic to say the least and a bit of a local place off the beaten path.

I had the fish tacos which were delish...Jordan had the lamb burger which was yummy!

The band was fun, check out their tip jar...it's a lite brite...Jordan and I both had those as kids.

A great place to visit while in San Antonio, best part was when we asked a local if she was from San Antonio and she replied, "And you're not, why aren't you at the Riverwalk?" I think the Cove is a local favorite.

After we arrived to our hotel, we decided to take a walk around and explore the Riverwalk, and we ended the night with a pint at an Irish pub across from our hotel.

The next morning we decided to go see the Alamo. What a beautiful place, it was so interesting to hear the story from historians and stand where so many men lost their lives for freedom. They do not allow photography on the inside the Alamo

I know it sounds cheesy, but I feel like after hearing the story again in the Alamo, I have a better understanding of "Texas pride."

After the Alamo, Jordan and I grabbed lunch and margaritas on the Riverwalk and then headed to the pool for some R & R. Our hotel hosts a happy hour on Friday with a Mariachi band, and we stopped by to check it out!

We decided to take a boat tour to learn a little more about San Antonio and the Riverwalk

No more Mr. Duck

20 credit hours and many hours studying behind me which means 1/3 of nursing school is complete! I have to admit it feels good, but I still feel I have awhile to go! Whew. The best part of the summer was the transition from Mr. Duck to the REAL patients.

Meet Mr. Duck, don't worry I don't climb in bed with all of my patients. Ha! These patients are poked, prodded and spoken to by nursing students on a regular basis. It's been fun Mr. Duck (we have Mrs. Ducks too), but I have to say I am FAN of the real patient. My clinical group started on an orthopedic floor and it was a great learning experience with dressing changes, shots, removal of drains, and even some baths--don't be jealous. Having real patients and having them talk back about the care I am giving them has only solidified my decision to become a nurse. So, here's to the next week and a half "summer" break and then we'll talk about the 23 hours for fall.

Some may think that the title does not really make sense this time of year, but the phrase could not be more perfect for academic hospital world. Jordan has completed his intern year successfully! I am so proud of him and everything that he has accomplished. I think he said he went from seeing one patient (H&P, order workup) in 45 min last July but by the end of June he had found his groove with 15 min per patient. I think he learned a lot and had more fun with Internal Medicine than he thought.

Here is the Radiology group, receiving their certificates and fancy paperweights for completing Intern year!

July 1, all has changed. He is now officially a member of the radiology department. I think he was a little nervous having to "start over" and find his groove again. He has made the transition well. He is working in CT body this month and works with a different Attending Physician everyday. He also has noon conference everyday where they are "pimped" with questions about ALL kinds of radiology stuff (differentials, diagnoses, and other RAD jargon I don't understand)

I hope Jordan never forgets this first year at Baylor. Some of the best moments I remember was the sweet lady that made him pralines, the 2am ER admission with the "nasty, pooty penis," the lady that told Jordan, "He saved her life" (she was really sick one night), oh Friday clinics with more pap smears than he wants to remember. December was awful, but other months were so much better....and so much more. Lots of stories and many memories!

So cheers to the new year! Looking forward to see what his "new first year" as a Radiology resident has to offer. Good luck Jordan, have an awesome year! 1 year down, 4 to go!

Well, as soon as we returned from our trek, we knew we would be busy. We installed our wood floor in our kitchen/dining/laundry area this past weekend with the help of Lili's mom and dad.

They turned out great and the room seems so different, check it out!

Tour de Mississippi

Shortly after Jordan and I completely terrorized our home, we made the trek to Mississippi. Jordan can only take vacation time in week increments (and during the months the hospital tells him to) and February was his month. So, we packed up our stuff and headed to the Coast first. Do you know how difficult it is to pack for a week in Mississippi? It's impossible! It is like any other place in the south. One day, 70 degrees the next 40...impossible.

It was great to be home and see family. While we were in Biloxi, we celebrated my mom's birthday with cake, ice cream, and a fun game of scrabble, Granny kicked all of our butts!

She's a pro, it was a set up. She can turn a two letter work into 34 points. AMAZING.

We also had a lot of great food-Maw Maw's Meatballs, and had dinner with Lili's Aunt and Uncles. We had a FABULOUS meal at the Chimney's. It was great and we enjoyed having a little extra time with John, Louise, and Mike!

After the Coast we headed up to Starkville to see one of my favorite people, Emily and her family (Reed and Smith) for lunch at Little Dooey's. It was so good to see Smith and how he is turning into such a handsome little man.

Then we headed to Pontotoc to see Jordan's family. We had so much visiting with Jordan's parents and grandparents. On Thursday, Jordan headed to North Georgia for a double Bachelor Party, and stayed in Mississippi. I had dinner with Amanda and Brandon in Tupelo Thursday and then drove up to see Lindsey in Oxford.

I was supposed to see Emily, Michaele and Otie but I became deathly ill in Oxford and ended up driving Sunday straight to Dallas. Lindsey was a great nurse to me and was great to let me hang out on her new couch and nice big bed! Thanks Linds....

Overall, the tour de Mississippi was a success, but all good things must come to an end.

Forget a long weekend at a B&B, a relaxing dinner at a fancy restaurant, and couples' massages....

For our Valentine's Day, Jordan and I transformed our dining area from this...

And forget flowers, chocolates, and lingerie...

my husband bought me hardwood floors, and I am so excited!!

My parents are going to come to Dallas the first weekend of March to help install it! Woohoo!

Jordan passed STEP 3!

So proud of him, and so happy that we don't have to pay for it again...those tests are expensive!

And....

Karma turned 3!

I know. She's just a puppy, but to Jordan and I she is our sweet little girl!

I bought her a rope to chew on, and we lit candles in a "birthday cake" just for her; I think it was chicken and beed favored; put it this way, we didn't have a piece!

It has snowed 12.5" in Dallas, Texas. Whoa! It has been kind of crazy around here. People here are definitely not used to this weather or driving and neither are we! We are so lucky that we did not lose power (a lot of people did). Jordan had to drive in Friday morning after the snow, and he said the biggest obstacle were the fallen trees.

The snow started to fall sometime around 2am Thursday morning, and didn't stop until sometime early Friday morning! When I woke up Thursday morning, I immediately noticed a big blanket in our front and backyard. Jordan had been up and hadn't even noticed. I think when he would have seen that his car was covered with 5" of snow, he might have realized that it snowed.

We had so much fun running around Thursday afternoon with Karma and Stan just throwing snowballs and making snow angels. We couldn't believe how much was accumulating so fast.

The Granada

Dallas has vintage theaters throughout the city. Some are refurbished movie theaters, others have live shows and The Granada on Greenville Avenue is pure live music.

We have been wanting to go to the Granada since we moved here and on Thursday, January 28th we went to see Todd Snider

It was a fun night, with great music. I think Jordan and I both loved Todd Snider but enjoyed the two opening acts just as much!

Jordan's parents, Bob and Debbie, visited us at the end of January and we had a great weekend. Friday, Bob bought us tickets to hear Carrie Newcomber at Uncle Calvin's Coffeehouse. Sounds normal enough right? Wrong. It was a very neat experience. Uncle Calvin's is a coffeehouse that features songwriters that just happens to also be a Presbyterian Fellowship Hall. So, picture this....should have taken a picture....about 30 minutes before the doors open, just like any other bar, there are lines of people BUT in the foyer of the church! No alcohol, it's Prebyterian (not Catholic), but they had coffee, tea, water, and cakes and pies! The fellowship hall has been completely transformed into a lounge sans booze and smoke. It was a beautiful night with music, very moving...

It was great hearing the story behind the music as well, don't you wonder what the songwriter was thinking when he/she wrote a song, she sang a beautiful song about her father.

The rest of the weekend was a lot of fun, we ran around Dallas, ate wonderful food, and watched the Saints beat Brett Farve and the Minnesota Vikings to make it to the Superbowl! Who Dat!

It is always great to visit family, and we are so grateful to have had the opportunity to visit with the Ray's since we missed everyone during Christmas! Thanks for coming, and next time, we'll meet you at Uncle Calvin's!

Well, Jordan finished STEP 3 (I am sure with flying colors) and in 6 short weeks, ha, we will know his score. We celebrated last night eating dinner with Hal and Sarah in Addison at a restaurant, Hulahan's. I personally celebrated with Smores for dessert. Anyone that knows Jordan knows that he could care less about anything sweet (he would rather have more "real" food or a beer)! So, I decided that for my good behavior for being so quiet during all of this studying, or leaving Jordan alone while he sat in our office for hours, I deserved a little chocolate--delish! Jordan passed the torch (STEP books to Hal), so that Hal could get to studying too! These boys are growing up so fast!!

Seriously, I know Jordan is relieved to have the test off his mind. Tonight he is on call at the hospital, so I am sure he will have an interesting night. For me, I am getting ready for visitors!! Guess who.....they are..

Death by Yoga....

Jordan and I set a great "resolution" or "life changing" goal for 2010. We joined the Tom Landry fitness center affiliated and located on Baylor's hospital campus. It's a great gym and I am really enjoying getting back into classes! So far, I have tried Zumba (loved it), Cardio Kick boxing (kicked my butt), two different pilates classes and today, yoga flow +. The class today was very small and very personal. The instructor right away noticed I was new and introduced herself. The attention didn't stop there, she helped me get into positions, and told me when I was doing something right or wrong. And although it was a little awkward being called out, it was incredibly refreshing that someone cared and I was able to receive some personal attention. The end of the class was the best, with meditation, breathing, and Ohms. I feel great today, but will probably be dying tomorrow.

Jordan is enjoying the gym too; his goal for the year is to finish a triathlon so he has been using the gym for cardio workouts and swimming (I also talked him into the cardio kick boxing class--that won't happen again).

In other news, Jordan has been busy with work and studying to take Step 3. He's taking it next Tuesday and Wednesday, and this will be his last medicine licensing exam, yea he will have to take more for radiology. I know this test has been weighing on his mind, and it will be a relief for him to have it over! Until then, I will be practicing my Ohms......

Basketball Season....NBA style

I love college basketball, more specifically MSU Basketball, and even more specifically being at the Hump when the lights go out and Hank Flick starts his opening announcements for an afternoon of "basket....ball!" GIVES. ME. CHILLS. Anyway, I digress. Jordan, Derek, Crystal, and I all went to see the Dallas Mavericks play the Utah Jazz at the American Airlines Center last Saturday night. It was my first NBA game, and we had a ton of fun! The AA center is so nice, and it was great to catch up with Derek and Crystal. The Foundation I work for had free tickets so we took advantage. Unfortunately the Mavs lost, but of course the Cowboys won that night for their first playoff game...so a good night for Dallas I guess. We had a great time, but I have to admit, it made me miss the bulldogs.

We had a great NYE in Dallas! It rained all day, but we got all dolled up for dinner at Victor Tango's (real swanky place)! On our way to dinner we reminisced, and laughed about how busy our year and really our decade had been.

March: Match Day, woohoo Dallas! House shopping began

April: honeymooning for two weeks in Italy/France

May: Jordan graduated from Medical School, we bought our first house together in TX

June: 1st move to a different state, 1st time to be responsible for a mortgage...eek!

July: the beginning of residency, Lili on the job market

August: Jordan's family visits Dallas, a little sightseeing

September: We threw Evan and Christy baby shower

October: 1st wedding anniversary!

November: we became an aunt and uncle! I cooked my 1st Thanksgiving turkey and fixins

December: Lili's parents visit! 1st Christmas in TX and 1st without family

Happy 2010! Jordan and I feel so blessed about these past ten years, and cannot wait to see all that we get to experience the next ten, twenty, thirty! For now, though, one day at time....Here's to 2010!

Has the black cloud lifted yet?

No, I am not talking about the weather, I am talking about Jordan's month on CCU (Cardiac Intensive Care Unit). I knew that this year would be difficult, Jordan knew that this year would be difficult but this last rotation took the cake! Of course it was during Thanksgiving and Christmas (which didn't make it any better), and he was at the hospital every 4 nights instead of 5 (boo...), but we were not prepared for what he had to deal with this month.

First of all, when an intern is on call, they are by themselves....only one person on call...in an intensive care unit...sleep in a room right down the hall from their very very sick patients. Then, as Jordan's resident Ewing said,"the black cloud came in on Jordan." He had a lot of patients die, not his fault, just very sick people.

He had one patient code three times one Saturday morning, and another man came in brain dead and Jordan along with some cardiologists initiated a cooling protocol for his entire body (he passed away too). Needless to say, I prayed for a lot of people I didn't know. Then we prayed for a couple of people we did know.

My aunt lost her step-mother to a lifelong battle to scleroderma (where your body attacks itself and as a result your whole body hardens), my parents had two other deaths of friends on the Coast, Emily lost a very good friend in MS, and we remembered a widow who lost her husband this year.

It was a sad month, and I think that doctors feel a sense of helplessness because here they are in a hospital, with every resource known to man, but ultimately cannot save someone's life. I think (I hope) that this month taught Jordan that sometimes things are left out of our hands and that God chooses when to take a life, not us.

So....as of this past Monday, Jordan is moving on, back to a regular ward of the hospital and with him moving on I hope the cloud moseys on out too!

I know this isn't the most positive post, but I hope one day Jordan will look back and appreciate the month for what he learned.

We have been blessed with a wonderful set of neighbors. We feel so fortunate to have a second family on our very street! Funny story, one next door neighbor is named Debbie (Jordan mom's name) and on the other side is Stan (my dad's name). Isn't that funny? Debbie even has a puppy named Lulu (my aunt's name). So, sometimes I feel like my family is right here! So Christmas Day night, we had some of our neighbors over for Egg Nog and some other treats! We had such a good time.

We were not able to make it home for Christmas, Jordan had to work Christmas Eve so we had a quiet Christmas in Dallas. Christmas Eve about noon we started having snow flurries and since it was literally 70 degrees the day before, I didn't get too excited thinking it wouldn't accumulate or stick. Well, this is what we woke up to Christmas morning....

It was breathtaking, so pretty! I woke up so early to take pictures, I was so afraid I would sleep late and it would all melt away!

Karma absolutely loved the snow! She was so frisky, and ran around in circles!

It wasn't very deep, you can see where we walked through the yard!

Jordan is going to kill me-this is only after 5 hours sleep, I think we look good

Mom and Dad visited us in Dallas December 4-7 and we had a blast! This was their first time to visit us in Dallas, and we are so glad they were able to visit! We went to the JFK Museum in the School Book Depository, and walked in Dealey Plaza downtown.

The street where JFK was shot, to the left is the School book depository. Anytime and I mean ANYTIME you will see people in the middle of the street, trying to see if the shots were possible as if they are conducting their own investigation.

Mom and Dad in front of the Depository, it's pretty interesting to see the museum, the evidence, and to be taken back in time to that moment in Dallas.

Karma loved having Mom and Dad in Dallas, she is so sad that they had to leave, she just loves all the extra attention and the extra love!

I put up our Christmas tree so that my parents could see our house decorated. Jordan and my dad cooked some steaks on Jordan's Big Green Egg. They were Fabulous!

Thanks again for coming and visiting us! I miss you everyday and I am so happy you came in town to see the house and us! Hope you had a wonderful wedding anniversary!! We love you!!

Boy, I have really been a slacker with this blogging stuff, but I am going to play catch up!

Jordan has been super busy at the hospital, he is on call a lot and is one reason why time is flying.

I started working at FitSteps, which is through the Cancer Foundation for Life. I basically help people fighting cancer or in remission regain strength and exercise. It's a ton of fun, I visit with people all day! The job has been a blessing in that I am around people who truly see life as a precious gift and it reminds me to be humble and appreciate everyday!

We had our 1st wedding anniversary, and celebrated with champagne and our year old cake! It was really yummy!

We went to the Texas State Fair and I ate fried snickers...mmmm!

I interviewed for Baylor School of Nursing Fast Bacc BSN program and I was ACCEPTED! I start school in May and I am so excited that I am not taking all of these random JUCO classes for nothing...ha!

I visited Charleston, SC to see my sweet niece Harper who was born November 4th! She's gorgeous, I want to go back already!

We celebrated Thanksgiving in Dallas with Hal and Sarah and I cooked my very own turkey!

My birthday (28th) on the 30th was great, I am truly blessed to have great friends and family who wished me lot of birthday wishes from near and afar!

That's a good start, but now I know why I haven't been blogging, between all this we have been also pricing for a new floor in our kitchen/dining area and I finished two community college classes. whew...

Jordan and I have had a fun week so far, but I have to blog about what happened to us Monday night. We went to G Love and Jason Mraz Monday night, after a quick dinner and running out the door to get to the show. When we approached the venue, we realized we didn't have a lot of cash on us, and figured we would just have to get money out of the ATM for drinks. BUT, we had to pay for parking. Parking was $15 and I immediately started counting what cash I did have in my wallet. I had $14 cash and 3 quarters. I turned to our compartment in the car and started to count out change. The lady collecting money snarked at us and said,"I am NOT TAKING PENNIES!" Okay, I wasn't about to give the woman 150 pennies, we had one nickel and I was going to give the rest in pennies. SHE REFUSED, and told us that we would have to get money out of the ATM in order to pay to park. IS A PENNY NOT MONEY ANYMORE? SHE WAS SO MEAN, and I am still appalled that we had to take money out of the ATM with an ATM fee so that this woman would have the inconvenience of counting some change! We played nice, took the money out of the ATM for the sake of not ruining our evening.....unbelievable! I know the whole freakonomics theory of the penny is worthless, but does this mean I should stop accepting the penny as change....I take money no matter the denomination!

A hunka hunka burning weekend!

Last weekend we were in Pontotoc celebrating two great events with Jordan's family:
1. Jordan's grandparents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary! The whole family celebrated at the Peabody complete with the ducks and a yummy brunch

2. the upcoming birth of Jordan's brother and sister-in-law's first child, our first niece, the first grandchild and great grandchild in the family!

The weekend was jammed packed and we literally ran around crazy! As soon as I get pictures back I will post about the actually events, but for now....

We drove to Pontotoc from Dallas, and on our way back to Dallas on Labor Day we decided to stop at Graceland! Jordan has never been, and I have only been once (when I was 12), and I LOVE Elvis. My grandmother and I used to watch all of his movies growing up (I know, cheesy) but I still love them. We only took the home/museum tour and it was not crowded at all.

To Be or Not To Be....Saluki

Karma and I visited the local neighborhood self service dog wash....

Yep, you read correctly, I washed her, and they provided the doggie friendly shower, shampoo, conditioner, and wash sponge.....and a heavy duty hair dryer that Karma did NOT enjoy.

The people there are super nice, the owner's dog roam freely throughout the store and we talked about Karma's diet, her hair shedding and what breed she might be.....we have no idea!

The owner suggested that Karma could be a Saluki....I responded, could you spell that?

As soon as I got home I googled Saluki

They are considered the first domesticated pet and there are even hieroglyphics of these dogs! The Egyptians had them as pets and even mummified them too.

Ok, for those of you that know Karma, you probably are saying to yourself, that's Karma, no that's Beano, Karma's long lost cousin.....just kidding!

Now, the next step is a Doggie DNA kit, yes for $59.95 we can find out exactly what our sweet little mutt is.....but for now Jordan calls her Saluki (half the time she responds)

Matters of the Heart

Jordan just finished his Cardiology month and he's moving on up.....to Radiology!

I think Jordan enjoyed some aspects of the month more than others

Jordan did have weekends off and no call-Major perk of an elective!
He learned a lot about basic cardiology
Worked with a nice Doctor, big deal since you spend every minute with them
"Played" in the Cath lab which I think is the main reason Jordan wanted to do Cardiology in the first place, he was able to feed the catheter from the Femoral Vein up to the Heart....very cool!

Of course, I think it also reminded Jordan of medical school and being a little bit of a shadow instead of getting to do more on his own....not a great feeling for someone with a Type A personality. All in all though, one more month down.....

Radiology should be lots of fun for him....especially since that's what he wants to do! Of course he's going to be more serious this month! He's already reading material and he hasn't even started yet! Yikes!

Are you ready for some football?

Jordan has been warning me for the last couple of weeks that football season is coming up and has even graciously given me the reign of the remote control.....knowing that he will demand football be shown at all hours around here very soon.

I have to say that I am lucky because I do not have one of those husbands that leaves the TV on ESPN for the sake of it being on ESPN. I do not have to watch bowling championships, poker tournaments, NASCAR (not a fan), or golf (sorry Evan, I don't know how Christy does it!); but when it comes to Football season, we are always watching someone play!

Well, we are quickly figuring out in Texas that we will not be the only ones obsessing about the pigskin sport this season! All the paper talks about is High School Football and the COWBOYS!

Lucky for us, Thursday night the Dallas Cowboys hosted an open practice and we drove over to Arlington with Hal (one of Jordan's residency friends)---we missed you Sarah!

It was so neat to see the new stadiumThe new $1.2 billion stadium-yes it looks like it is about to take off at any minute!

I love when this commerical comes on, the song is so happy! I am still searching for a job, and some days it gets very frustrating! But this song makes me smile and feel better!
FYI Dawn has been under fire for the cruelty of animals that are in the commercial when their goal is to help the animals in the first place, and animal rights activists claim that there is plenty of footage of oil spills that could have been used instead of "staging" these animals....they look fine to me....remember to turn off my music at the bottom! : )

Lately in the morning I have a routine. Jordan makes coffee and I enjoy it in the morning with Good Morning America and then Good Morning Texas! On Wednesday, I was minding my own business and enjoying my coffee when I heard a thud on my front window. I noticed a dark bug on my window and upon closer inspection.....It was two bugs....one a locust, and the other a really mean stinging bug (do not know technical name)! They were huge and connected?!?
I had to grab my camera to document the HUGE bugs....at first I thought they were doing the deed, but quickly realized that the big mean bug was killing the poor locust. Really? On my window? I guess everything is BIGGER in Texas. Completely grossed me out, and I didn't leave the house the rest of the day! ha....

In other news, Jordan's parents came to visit this past weekend and we ran around all over the DFW area showing them the town....I know, you are probably thinking YOU don't know the town....so, you're right, we discovered it together. More to come when someone (hint hint...Whitney) sends me some pictures from the weekend!

I am also very excited that we are welcoming a baby (our first niece) into the family. Evan and Christy are welcoming their first child in November and we are hosting a small family/friend shower in P town! I have been having fun with the invitations, and they turned out great! I even coordinated the stamps! Check them out!

So, when we were moving, we made sure that all of our furniture was protected and not damaged. With Jordan on a resident salary and not sure of what I would be doing, we didn't have a ton of money to buy all new things. We were very lucky that NOTHING was broken....well except Jordan's TV stand from Walmart. It was a cute TV stand but we had outgrown it. We do not have an impressive collection of DVDs but the storage was just too small even for us!

My parents drove to Jackson the day before we left and helped us pack and thank goodness my dad broke the TV stand. I was so happy (Jordan and I had already debated whether we should even move it to Texas) and when the piece broke, our decision was made! So my dad helped us , really, THANKS! It was left in Jackson. We have been living with our TV on the floor and FINALLY found a piece of furniture that Jordan and I both loved and it has arrived.

It's perfect....everything fits tucked away and I love that it doesn't have to be a media piece, so we can keep it always and use it in different ways!

We celebrated the end of Jordan's first month of residency on Friday! Yipee! I think he had an interesting first month. He started on wards, which is just the regular adults floors of the hospital, but if his patients became very sick he followed them to the Intensive Care Unit. That's different from some hospitals, and different from UMC. At one point Jordan had 9 patients on his own! I think he did great....of course I do, but his resident complimented him as well!

Things we have learned this month:
1. When Jordan says, "I think I will be home early today...", Jordan will be home late.
2. Just because you work and sleep at the hospital for 36 hours straight, the nurses can still page you about your patients.
3. Jordan really knows more than we thought..ha...he had had a couple of conversations from home and I HAD NO IDEA WHAT HE WAS SAYING.....but it sounded good.
4. Jordan pronounced the death of a patient(s). :(
5. It's not that bad!

I will never forget Jordan's first day when he woke me up to say goodbye at 5:15AM and said, "Say a prayer for my patients." I have never prayed for more sick people I did not know ever in my life.

Another great quote from Jordan this month was,"My patients are all trying to die on me today!"

We celebrated on Friday with a Mexican dinner and margaritas hosted by a cardiology group at Baylor and it was great to visit with the other intern/radiology guys!

Great job Jordan, keep it up, 1 month down, 4 years 11 months to go!

Loving the Rain!

For awhile there I didn't think it rained at all in Dallas. Even though we are not far from Mississippi, it seems so much more dry here! The rain gives us a little hope that our grass may have a chance.....we have been trying not to kill it, but several spots are yellow and it looks like it is going down fast.....I have been apologizing to all of our neighbors and promising them that we will try harder next summer...haha! I have never had to water grass! A lot of Dallas homes have sprinkler systems, but WE are the sprinkler system. Wishing and praying for rain is definitely a sign that I am getting older....I will never forget my grandmother telling me as a child, "Oh Lawd, we need rain!" and I thought she was crazy, rain would just ruin my summer plans.....well I am officially old, we needed the rain! ; )

A New House, New Blog

After being a blog stalker for a quite awhile now, I have decided to join the blogging world and document our life! We are settling in Dallas and finding our way around. We are so excited about being able to share our life on this blog but also document this time in our lives. Our little house is so cute and we are slowly making it our own. It's in East Dallas and really close to White Rock Lake which is a 9 mile loop with beautiful water views right in the city! Dallas is such a neat city with so much to offer. It reminds me of Birmingham with lots of little pocket areas to explore. Here's a picture of the outside of the house and I will add more soon!
